I'm feeling rather generous tonight .. er, guess it's more like this morning .. and thought I'd share an excerpt from the sequel to Origins that I've been working on. The book, entitled Blood Lust, takes off directly from the ending of Origins where you get an insight into Vraiden's point of view. So, without further ado, here it is, an excerpt from Chapter One:
Before I can lose my nerve, I spin and stalk across the room to her father, the weaker of the two. Bending down, I grasp him firmly by his hair and yank him upward. He screams, the curse muffled by the duct tape covering his mouth.
I shut my eyes momentarily, mentally preparing for the task at hand, and rip the tape off. “I want your daughter to hear you suffer. It’ll make this a lot more fun.”
Reaching into my pocket, I extract the same pocketknife I used during Adelin and my blood letting and flick open the blade before pressing it against her father’s throat. Taking a deep breath I peer over my shoulder to where Adelin stands, chained and vulnerable. “You ready for this? Do you have a good view? Want to pick one now?”
She shakes her head, desperate, as tears begin to stream down her cheeks. I think about taking the knife and ramming it into Eris’ heart .. the joy from that thought alone is enough to make me consider doing it before the reality of what would happen if I were to do such a thing sets in. Eris would kill them all .. Adelin, her mother, her father .. all of them and she would make me watch. Luc too if she found out he was outside. There’s no possible way that I would be able to watch as Adelin died, helpless to stop it.
“No. Please, no. don’t make me choose. Kill me. Please, kill me instead,” she begs.
“That wouldn’t be nearly as much fun, Sunshine.”
Her father opens his mouth, “Adelin, don’t look. Close your eyes.”
He then directs his gaze to me, looking at me with unwavering determination, and I know that he is willing to die for her, to protect her no matter the cost. I return his stare, knowing that I at least owe him the right to look into his killers eyes as he dies.
Taking a deep breath I give myself over to the darkness, knowing that there will be no coming back from this. “Going once, going twice ..” I call out before slicing into his neck.
